     Pour ne parler que de la sante, la lutte conte les virus (SIDA, etc.), la mise au point de nouveaux medicaments anticancereux (epothilone, taxotere, etc.) et la destruction des souches bacteriennes resistantes, sont quelques uns des defis que la societe devra affronter avec l'aide de ses chimistes.

     Les mathematiques constituent a la fois une Science tres moderne et une Science tres ancienne : on a ecrit autant de mathematiques durant les 30 dernieres annees que pendant les 25 siecles qui ont precede.      Mathematics underwent a profound change in 2003 on the transfer of UNIL basic Sciences to the EPFL. While the separation between pure math (UNIL) and applied math (EPFL) was not absolute (as pure mathematicians had been hired at the EPFL in the 30 years since its federalization), the transfer has injected a much stronger fundamental component as well as a mandate to continue to develop research and teaching in pure mathematics.
